A Livestock Worker assists with the daily care, handling, feeding, and general management of farm animals. The position may be available on livestock farms, agricultural estates, breeding facilities, ranches, and mixed farming operations where animals are raised for agricultural production.
Daily duties may include feeding animals, providing clean drinking water, preparing feed, cleaning animal housing and feeding areas, maintaining bedding, monitoring the general condition of livestock, and assisting with the safe movement of animals between pens, shelters, grazing areas, and other designated locations.
Depending on the type of farm, workers may care for cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, poultry, or other farm animals. Responsibilities can also include assisting with breeding activities, caring for young animals, preparing animals for transportation, checking fences and enclosures, handling feed and farm supplies, and reporting signs of illness, injury, or unusual behaviour to the farm supervisor.
Livestock work requires careful and responsible animal handling. Workers should understand the importance of maintaining clean facilities, providing appropriate food and water, following animal welfare practices, and keeping working areas safe for both animals and employees.
The job can involve outdoor and indoor work in barns, sheds, pens, pastures, and other agricultural areas. Workers may be required to stand, walk, bend, lift, carry feed or equipment, clean animal areas, and work in different weather conditions. Depending on the farm, early morning, evening, weekend, or seasonal work may also be required.
Previous experience in livestock farming, animal care, dairy farming, cattle handling, sheep or goat farming, poultry work, or general agricultural activities can be beneficial. Some employers may provide practical training to suitable workers who demonstrate responsibility, willingness to learn, and the ability to follow farm procedures.
Successful Livestock Workers should be physically fit, patient, observant, dependable, and comfortable working around animals. Good teamwork, safe animal handling, cleanliness, and attention to instructions are important qualities for the position.
